Best Way to Add Cozy to Your Home This Fall and Winter

When decorating for the darker season you probably think of adding fall colors, scented candles, throws, and faux natural items to cozy up your home, but, there is something else that is simple to do and that makes an even bigger impact. What is it? Lighting! Adding a layer of soft lighting feels soothing, peaceful, cozy, and adds “warmth”. When I start working with clients many of them are relying solely on overhead ceiling lighting. It is simple to add another layer of warm light for winter and I will show you how.

My favorite way to bring in more light is to add a mini table lamp. They are readily available in big box stores and are perfect for the dark corner of a kitchen counter. Turn it on around dinner time and leave on all evening.

In the Linden Hills Project, a mini table lamp adds warm light in the evening in keeping with the home’s vintage charm.

Another favorite and super simple way to bring in cozy warm light is battery operated candles. The best part is that they can be lit where regular candles can’t be used, such as on a bookshelf or a room that you might forget to blow out a burning candle.

The candles I use have a 4 hour timer that starts the first time you turn them on. After that, they turn on automatically every day at that time, such as 6:00pm-10:00pm.

Lastly, wall sconces are a great way to bring in soft light. You can purchase the plug-in type, or sconces can be hardwired into your home’s electrical. Great places for softly lit wall sconces are hallways, front foyers and stairways for safe passage.

For this Annandale project we used an art light at the end of the hallway. In addition to creating a beautiful moment, it gives them the option of softer lighting while the children get ready for bed.
