Found Space and A Place For Everything

Phase two remodel for great clients, this time focusing on the main floor mudroom, laundry room, and guest bedroom suite.

BEFORE: The mudroom was full of constricting walls and an angle garage entry door. Not to mention it was also the main laundry room! There was an unneeded door to the backyard. Also, the walls jutted out into the walkway constricting traffic flow and making the room feel even smaller.

LAYOUT CONCEPT CREATION: It is important that people see the possibilities their space holds. I showed the clients several layout configurations of the spaces. Ultimately, they chose the option that removed the laundry from the mudroom giving them a spacious mudroom with plenty of storage for their growing family. We created a new laundry room - literally a new room - that used to be part of the large main floor guest bedroom. (More about the laundry room in a future post)

Mudroom After

FINISH SELECTIONS: Having worked with me before, the clients were super open to my design vision for their space. Besides being highly functional, the finishes make the room bright and pretty. The herringbone layout pattern of the durable porcelain tile floor contrasts with the soft black of the cabinets. The white oak bench adds a light texture, and the subtle wall color is a sophisticated color backdrop that complements the scheme.

DURING CONSTRUCTION: When the contractor demoed the mudroom, we got the best news! The wall jut out on the exterior wall could be completely removed and the HVAC chase in the opposite wall could be cut back. This allowed the cabinets on the exterior wall to continue uninterrupted and gave them a wider walkway.

AFTER: The door to the garage was pushed out in line with the exterior walls; and the unused exterior door replaced with a large window. All of these things opened up a beautiful mudroom with ample amounts of storage, and of course, visual appeal.
